Donald Trump, President of the United States and one of the Twitter’s most prominent users, is threatening to regulate or shut down social media companies apparently after Twitter flagged some of his tweets with fact checks warning, as in potentially misleading or false.
Trump has written tens of thousands of tweets after becoming the President, but now he’s threatening to shut down Twitter. In a first, Twitter has flagged two if Trump’s tweets with a warning. One of them he posted about the mail-in ballots.
Twitter on Tuesday took the step of adding warning badges to Trump’s tweets about Mail-in Ballots after the President claimed without the evidence that voting by mail would result in fraud. Readers who clicked the blue warning button were taken to a news story debunking Trump’s claims. Some have urged Twitter to take stronger actions against Trump’s allegations and delete his tweets.
The social media platform declined to remove the tweets as it has a long-standing policy not to remove tweets of world leaders on the arguments that they are newsworthy. But since the coronavirus, we have seen Twitter has taken down tweets of other presidents, including the President of Brazil, the President of Venezuela.
Trump wrote, “Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen. We saw what they attempted to do, and failed, in 2016. We can’t let a more sophisticated version of that .happen again. Just like we can’t let large scale Mail-In Ballots take root in our Country. It would be a free for all on cheating, forgery and the theft of Ballots. Whoever cheated the most would win. Likewise, Social Media. Clean up your act, NOW!!!!”
Trump had earlier mentioned on Twitter that MSNBC host Joe Scarborough was implicated in the death of a woman in 2001 when he was a Florida congressman.
Husband of the young woman even wrote to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and requested to take action against Trump’s tweets and accused him of using it for perceived political gain.
Trump has made another tweet accusing Twitter of having politically biased and said that he would promise big action in term of Twitter.
