Trump to ban Tik Tok, WeChat within 48 hours

According to the latest reports, widely used Chinese apps TikTok and WeChat are likely to be banned from the US. The Department of Commerce informed that it would bar people in the states from downloading apps through any app store on any platform.

While WeChat will shut down starting Sunday, TikTok will be available for use till November 12. Nevertheless, the app could be purchased by an American company in which case it will not be shut down. The Trump administration has hinted about “last minute deals” for TikTok.

The Trump administration has repeatedly accused the apps of threatening national security by providing confidential data to the Chinese government. However, the accusation has been denied by both, China and the companies.

In response to the development, TikTok has expressed “disappointment” while claiming to have adopted “unprecedented levels of additional transparency” in light of the Trump administration’s concerns. Tencent, the owner of WeChat has also said that the company would continue talks with the US government to derive a long-term solution.

Earlier, the Indian government had also bannedTikTok along with hundreds of other Chinese apps due to security concerns.
