During a white house press conference on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump announced a $1.5 billion contract for 100 million doses of the eventual COVID-19 vaccine with a US biotech company, Moderna.
Moderna, has not previously developed a vaccine of any kind and yet has successfully passed the preliminary tests of the prospective coronavirus vaccine. It is currently working in partnership with the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), to conduct Phase 3 clinical trials of a vaccine candidate.
“We’re on track to rapidly produce 100 million doses as soon as the vaccine is approved, and up to 500 million shortly thereafter, so we’ll have 600 million doses,” Trump said in the press conference.
This was the 6th such deal since May while Trump has already invested $10.9 in the development of the Coronavirus vaccine.
According to the head of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Dr Anthony Fauci the vaccine is expected to show results by the end of the year 2020.
President Donald further alleged ” The United States has conducted more than 66 million tests, far more than any other nation in the world. India, which has a population of 1.5 billion people, has done 24 million (tests) at second,” A tweet by ANI read.
