Former Rwanda Prime Minister Pierre Habumuremyi arrested

The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) confirmed that former Prime Minister Dr Habumuremyi Pierre Damien and Prof Egide Karuranga, President of Kibungo University were arrested on Friday. They have been sent to jail for two days.

Habumuremyi was arrested on two counts of felony criminal mischief issuing unsecured checks for treason.

RIB spokesperson Dominique Bahorera confirmed the news of the arrest. Bahorera refrained from disclosing how the crimes were committed, saying they were still under investigation.

Former Prime Minister Dr Habumuremyi is the founder of the Christian University of Rwanda that has a campus in the capital Kigali.

Dr Habumuremyi served as Prime Minister of Rwanda from 2011 to 2014. He previously served as Minister of Education from May 2011 to October 2011.
