NDA candidate Harivansh appointed as Deputy Chairman during monsoon parliament session

NDA candidate Harivansh was appointed as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha during the monsoon session of the parliament today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the newly elected Rajya Sabha member while referring to him as an “outstanding umpire who belongs to all sides of the aisle”.

PM Modi further praised the new deputy chairman for being unbiased in his dealings. “The respect I hold for Harivansh ji, each member of the House shares. He has earned this respect. His unbiased role in the Parliament strengthens our democracy,” he said.

In response re-elected Harivansh thanked everyone who believed in him, “I am grateful to all of you that you considered fit to give this important responsibility to a person who hails from a very ordinary family based in a village and who never went to an English-medium school,” he told ANI.

Additionally, Seventeen members of the Lok Sabha have tested positive for novel coronavirus after they underwent the mandatory COVID-19 test before the parliament session. The infected members include 12 from BJP, 2 from YSR congress whereas, the Shiv Sena, DMK and RLP have one infected member each.

Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan had previously stated that the number of COVID cases and related deaths in India are among the “lowest in the world”.

 “With our endeavor to manage COVID-19, India has been able to limit its cases and deaths to 3,328 cases and 55 deaths per million population respectively, which is one of the lowest in the world as compared to similarly affected countries,” Vardhan had said.
