Smriti Irani attacked for UN speech on “women empowerment” with no mention of Hathras incident

Smriti Irani was attacked by congress on Friday for her speech on “women empowerment” in the UN. Congress leader Supriya Shrinate, accused Irani of being indifferent towards the gruesome Hathras incident that has caused outrage in the nation.

The union minister addressed the United Nations on the 25th Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women on Friday. In her speech, she lauded the measures taken by the government concerning the safety and wellbeing of women in the nation.

“Several of our legislations in India such as those pertaining to sexual harassment of women at the workplace, protection of women from domestic violence, protection of children from sexual offences, and our criminal laws’ amendments have been strong enablers of women empowerment and protection of children especially girls, over the past six years,” Irani said.

She has since attracted major backlash for her blatant disregard of the Hathras incident wherein, a 20-year old Dalit woman lost her life after being raped by four upper “caste men”. Supriya Shrinate in her tweet said, ” Unbelievable double-speak @smritiirani ji. You stay silent as a gruesome crime against women is reported from UP.  And here you are talking about women empowerment with a straight face? When was the last time as an MP or as Women & Child Dev Min you spoke to even one victim?”

In response, Irani has informed that UP CM Yogi Adityanath has ensured that strict action will be taken against the guilty. She has also taken a dig at the Congress party for allegedly politicizing the incident. “People understand that their visit to Hathras is for their politics and not for justice to the victim,” she said.
