On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the submarine Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) connecting Chennai and Port Blair. The ceremony took place via video conferencing.
The cable will be connecting Port Blair to nearby Swaraj Dweep, Little Andaman, Car Nicobar, Kamorta, Great Nicobar, Long Island, and Rangat ensuring quicker and more dependable delivery of mobile and landline telecom services to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The provision is anticipated as a landmark achievement for consumers while being a strategic move for governance. It is expected to improve the delivery of e-governance services such as telemedicine and tele-education.
Improved telecom and broadband services are further likely to boost tourism in the islands.
According to a press release by PMO the project was funded under the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) by the central government via the Ministry of Communications. The credits for the execution and consultations were given to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL) respectively.
Under the project, a 2,300 km long optic fiber has been laid while the estimated cost of the venture is about ₹ 1,224 crore.
Pm Modi led the foundation stone for the project in December 2018.
