Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra has once caught the media’s attention for her sizzling speech on the setting up of the PM CARES Fund in the Lok Sabha on Saturday.
Moitra said that a fund lacks transparency as it was based off a public office and yet, is not open to RTI. “ you are raising a fund on the basis of a public office. By saying it is not open to RTI, you are running away from transparency,” she said.
She suggested that Bill amends the provisions of the Income Tax Act to provide the same tax treatment to PM-CARES Fund as available to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
She was additionally, supported by other opposition leaders in her stance opposing the setting up of the PM CARES Fund in Lok Sabha. Opposition leader, N K Premachandran (RSP) while initiating a debate on Taxation and Other Laws, demanded to know the distinction between the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund and the PM CARES Fund.4
“lacks transparency as it is not audited by Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). Further RTI is also not applicable,” he stated in reference to the fund.
Moitra was applauded by people across the media for her incredibly articulate attack on the ambiguous Centre. She had previously turned heads with her 2019 speech on the “signs of early fascism in India”. She also secured international attention for the same.
