The government has approved the use of antiviral medication Remdesivir for treatment of laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to a report by CNN-News 18.
US-based pharma company Gilead Sciences, which develops the drug was in talks with several Indian companies for open licensing of Remdesivir.
Remdesivir is a nucleotide, which stops the RNA viral replication leading to no mutation. It has, most importantly, lesser toxicity.
Remdesivir has already been used in some specific cases. It was also used during the Ebola outbreak in several countries.
The United States approved the use of Remdesivir for COVID-19 treatment in May.
