In a devastating tragedy, at least 16 migrant workers were killed after coming under a good train in Aurangabad district on Friday morning. RPF and local police reached the spot to asses the situation.
The accident took place at around 5.30 am. The migrant workers used to work for a major steel plant in Jalna.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the tragic accident.
As per the reports, the workers set out to walk 170km along the Aurangabad-Jalna railway track and slept beside the tracks due to exhaustion caused by the long journey under harsh sun yesterday.
The incident once again throws light on the heart-wrenching plight of the migrant workers who are struggling to get back to their homes after losing their livelihood due to the lockdown.
The incident raises questions on the efficiency of the government’s initiative of plying passenger trains to ferry these migrant workers back to their hometowns. The confusion surrounding how to sing up for the journey and inability to pay for the ticket fares have forced these workers to walk hundreds of kilometres.
