20 year-old dalit gangrape victim dies in Delhi hospital today

In another case of violence against women and minorities, a twenty year old dalit woman was brutally gang-raped and tortured by four men in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh on September 14. The woman has succumbed to death today while she was undergoing treatment in a hospital in Delhi.

Her condition was reported to be critical with severe fractures and her tongue cut off after the horrific assault was carried out by the four “upper caste” men. She had been admitted to the ICU in a hospital in Uttar Pradesh but was moved to Delhi yesterday.

The woman had named the accused as Sandeep, his uncle Ravi (35) and their friend Luv Kush when she had regained consciousness during a brief period of time. Four accused have been arrested under the charges of gangrape, attempt to murder, and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The main accused, Sandeep is infamous for his assaults against dalits and women. Additionally, Sandeep’s grandfather was also been booked under the SC/ST Act whence he had served three months in prison several years ago.

While the victim’s family has been promised a compensation of 10 lakhs, they have repeatedly accused the UP police of stalling and reacting only after public outrage. However, the police has dined any such allegations.

“We were told that she would be taken to AIIMS but she was taken to Safdarjung,” one of the brother’s of the victim added.

Opposition leader, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has blamed UP CM Yogi Adityanath for the growing crimes in the state. “You are responsible for the safety of women,” she stated while tagging the CM.
