A multi-story building collapsed in the Bhiwandi area of Maharashtra around 3:30 a.m. on Monday. According to recent updates, the death toll has risen to 10 while dozens are still feared to be trapped.
A team of 40 emergency workers, including a team of 30 rescuers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed at the site. About 31 individuals have been rescued so far, including a child who was recently pulled out of the rubble.
The news comes in a month after another building had collapsed in the Raigad area of Maharashtra. More than 11 people were found dead subsequently.
Prime minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences on Twitter. “Saddened by the building collapse in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra. Condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for a quick recovery of those injured. Rescue operations are underway and all possible assistance is being provided to the affected,” the tweet read.
The rescue mission is currently underway.
